Refer to Creating a Focal Point (page 15) for various ways a focal point can be created through the use of value. Key points to remember: • Using differentials of at least two or three values is one of the best ways to create a center of attention. • Edges need to look clear and sharp against the background. • Contrasting hues help create an area of interest. • Contrasting sizes will enhance the focal point. Larger objects (like the blossom) draw more attention when surrounded by smaller ones (the buds and leaves), and vice versa.

If you use a darker or lighter sky fabric, the value of these large pieces will need to be adjusted. Lighter values or toned hues tend to make background objects appear hazy and distant, creating atmospheric perspective. Foreground pieces are generally more saturated with color and should differ in value from background pieces. In this quilt, the road and sky are considered part of the pieced background. The trees and shrubs are in the foreground. • The composition’s purest hues should be used for foreground objects to make them seem closer.
