An accusation of “conspiracy in the murder of the king” was all the excuse Alexander needed to kill anyone who might stand in the way of his kingship. Among the first to die was Attalus. He had arranged 41 – Alexander the Great – the outrage that drove Pausanias to kill Philip, but his real crimes were drunkenly insulting Alexander’s legitimacy at the wedding banquet for Philip and, now, his reported plotting to overthrow the new king. Alexander’s agents found Attalus stationed in northwestern Anatolia with his fellow general and father-in-law Parmenion and the advance forces of the Macedonian army.

Philip sent Alexander and his Companions to study under this foreign teacher in a sacred location, the Sanctuary of the Nymphs in Mieza, two days’ journey from the capital. The teenagers lived and studied apart from their parents and the rest of Macedonian life. Philip spared no expense in setting up this private school for his son and a select few young members of the Macedonian social elite. Philip believed that this special and high-powered education away from court, with a great teacher who uniquely combined theoretical knowledge with its practical application, would produce the best possible king and the best possible friends and advisors for him.

Pixodarus wrote back that he would be delighted to have Alexander as his son-in-law. Someone informed Philip of these secret negotiations. The king burst in on his younger son to berate him. The focus of Philip’s outrage suggests that in this affair, Alexander made an uncharacteristic miscalculation. Plutarch tells the story of the angry confrontation between father and son, and in this account Philip was not angry over Alexander’s meddling in affairs of state, but over his bad judgment in a matter of honor.
