He was apparently anxious that he should have the advantage of the solid education that a study of the excellent qualities of paintings by the great masters could provide, an education that would, in fact, prepare him to paint many types of landscapes.

He noted that these whites produced a range of (optical) greys that established a tonal framework for subsequent colour glazes and touches of impasto. 10 When examining the technique of Titian's Christ Being Crowned with Thorns, after making acute observations concerning the picture's psychological dynamics, he observed that it possesses a green-brown ground. 11 He also noted that the drapery worn by Christ appeared to have the effect of crimson, though in fact it "is only a wash [of] (V[ermilion] R[ed]) ,"12 Turner completed a still more penetrating technical analysis in his sketchbook of another historical painting by Titian, the Entombment of Christ.
